First efforts to establish a higher education institution in Opava go back as far as 1870. The attempts, however, did not materialize until more than a century later following the dramatic social and political changes in 1989 when the enthusiasm that swept the nation made Opava’s university a reality in an exceptionally short time. The Silesian University in Opava was established in 1991 and today it offers a broad selection of courses of different levels and content. The Faculty of Public Policies, the youngest part of the university, was founded in 2008.
